Prior to that, she was a dietician and would color in the evenings to relax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The flowers and fruits in botanical subject matter appealed to her because she could play with a full range of color. This technique creates a luminous blended base of color to which she can add detail.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI like the precision and the detail you can achieve with colored pencils,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd the lack of messiness. When I\u2019m done, I can put everything away, just clear my space.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps that\u2019s also the appeal of this technique. (In addition to seeing it in online videos, she learned this technique from Alyona Nickelsen\u2019s book, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/41xmH2R\">Colored Pencil Painting Bible<\/a><\/em> (2009). (The blue floral drawings in the background, which can be found on her Patreon site as tutorials, rely heavily on this technique.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For this technique, Morrison uses a few specific tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpbolvw.net\/click-100503200-12117697?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dickblick.com%2Fitems%2Fprismacolor-premier-colored-pencil-botanical-colors-set-of-12%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prismacolor <\/a>is her preferred brand of pencil for this technique, because it tends to deposit a rich layer of pigment, although she says this technique works for any brand. (In the video, she uses Danthrin Blue base layer and White for the detail.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The paint thinner she uses is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpbolvw.net\/click-100503200-12117697?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dickblick.com%2Fproducts%2Futrecht-nood-odorless-paint-thinner%2F\">Utrecht\u2019s NOOD Odorless Paint Thinner<\/a>. It\u2019s odorless and effective, and a 4-ounce bottle will last her an entire year, even drawing every day like Morrison does. Morrison applies it almost as a drybrush technique, making sure to remove excess thinner on a rag or washcloth before applying it to the pigment. Allow the paint thinner to dry completely before going back in with a pencil. If it\u2019s still wet, the tip of the pencil may crumble, as the thinner dissolves the blender in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While this works for most papers, Morrison is a fan of using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jdoqocy.com\/click-100503200-12117697?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dickblick.com%2Fproducts%2Frising-museum-board%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rising Museum Board from Legion Papers<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For brushes, any inexpensive, firm-bristled brush can work. Morrison keeps several on hand, and likes a no. 2 or no. 4 because of the detailed aspect of her work, usually a filbert or a flat. She also has a scrubber brush on hand.
